“Hello?”

I recognized the caretaker’s voice immediately. “Claudia. It’s me, Pride. May I speak with Paola, please?”

I heard her sharp intake of breath. “Just a minute.”

A moment later, I heard a slight wheezing on the other end, followed by Paola’s accented voice. “If you’re calling, I expect you have something for me, after all.”

“I saw an art collector today,” I began. “Are you familiar with the painting Sum of All Prophets?”

“I’m not. Please elucidate.”

“An artist from the commune painted it before she vanished,” I said. I guess I didn’t need to add the before she vanished part. I suppose that was implied. “Anyway, Arjun—the collector—discovered a letter stuck to the back of the painting. He wouldn’t let me keep the art, but he let me have the letter. I’ve just finished reading it, and I thought…well, you said you wanted me to tell you something about the commune no one else knows. This letter might be that something.”

Paola sniffed. “I’m listening.”

I drew in a breath. “It’s a letter from the artist to her child. No names are used, though, so I’m not sure who the recipient was supposed to be. But I think…maybe…”

I heard the grin in her voice when she said, “You think perhaps it was written for you.”

I sighed and nodded. “I know how that sounds. Believe me. I feel like I should check myself into the looney bin just for thinking it. But yes. I think it’s a letter from my mother to me. However, I’m not sure how to interpret it. Some of what she says is unclear.”

“Unclear how?”

I hesitated. The truth was, the letter wasn’t really unclear at all. But if I was reading it right, the narrative we’d all come to believe about the commune might not be accurate. “Maybe you’d like to read it for yourself,” I said finally. “That’s what you want, isn’t it? You wanted new information no one else has. Well, this is your chance.”

I heard movement on the other end—the rustling of clothes, the squeak of a chair as she readjusted herself. I wished I could see her face. Was she smiling? Had she anticipated this? Was she about to hyperventilate with absolute elation? Finally, she said, “Meet me at my home tomorrow. Bring the letter. Don’t be late.”

She disconnected.

Craig had gone, so I put the phone away and stretched out on the bed, staring at the ceiling. I replayed the contents of the letter over and over, my heart rate picking up each time. And not just because of what the letter said—but how I ended up with it in the first place. If I hadn’t been at that séance with Andromeda, I wouldn’t have heard the message telling me to come find the painting. And I wouldn’t have been there if I hadn’t been investigating Tamora Preston’s catfishing case. And I wouldn’t have been doing that if I hadn’t been cast on Sinful House. And I wouldn’t have been on Sinful House if Shayda hadn’t broken up with me.
